Design Tape is a necessary tool for all decorative concrete overlay contactors. It allows you to create custom patterns in thin overlays and microtoppings. By laying out design tape before applying an overlay, you are able to recreate tile patterns, stone patterns, or brick patterns. Design Tape is fibrous, making it more durable than painter’s tape or masking tape. This means it can hold up to a cementitious overlay.
First, apply the basecoat of overlay. This serves as the “grout” lines in most designs. Lay out the design tape in the brick, stone, or tile pattern. Apply the subsequent coating of overlay. Allow it to set and gently pull up the tape to reveal the design. Additional tape and coats, along with water-based stains and stencils, can help create more intricate designs.
